The Charm of the Yushima Area
Since the Edo period, Yushima has flourished as a unique intersection of academia, spiritual faith, and culture.

Yushima Tenjin (Yushima Tenmangu Shrine)
Established in 458 AD, Yushima Tenjin became dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of scholarship, in 1355. Highly revered by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu during the Edo period, it remains a beloved landmark today—not only for students praying for academic success but also as one of Tokyo’s premier spots for viewing plum blossoms.

Yushima Seido (Confucian Temple)
Dedicated to Confucius, Yushima Seido was a central hub for Confucianism in Japan. During the Edo period, it served as a government-run academy where numerous scholars and intellectuals gathered. Its magnificent architecture, deeply influenced by traditional Chinese design, stands as a solemn symbol of Yushima’s identity as a “district of learning.”

Shinjo-in Temple – The “Shoten-sama” of Yushima
Located directly in front of Elite-inn Yushima, Shinjo-in is affectionately known as “Yushima Shoten.” The temple is famous for its sacred spring, Yanagi-no-i, believed to bless visitors with beautiful hair and spiritual purification. Its pond, once known as the “Turtle Temple” pond, has been restored as the heart-shaped Shinji-ike, offering a peaceful spot where you can still spot charming turtles today.

Nikolai-do (Holy Resurrection Cathedral)
A masterpiece of Meiji-era Western architecture, this Russian Orthodox cathedral adds a touch of exotic elegance to the historic landscape of Yushima. Its magnificent brick exterior is a striking landmark that reflects the international history of the area.

Some believe that Shinobazu Pond was once connected to Tokyo Bay, serving as a site for water transport and fishing in ancient times. Now part of Ueno Park, it charms visitors with its iconic lotus flowers and swan boats. Walking along its banks while imagining its ancient connection to the sea offers a profound sense of the city’s evolution.
